Alex's Story

It all started with Alex saying 'I wanna be a goalie!' Scared, my wife and I tried to trick him out of this decision so many times, but nothing we could think of would stifle his enthusiasm. 'You know, goalies don't score very much, if ever.' 'Goalie skates are different than what you're used to wearing.' 'Kid, those pucks come at you FAST. If they catch a weak spot in your gear, it's gonna hurt. A lot.' And then, finally we had to own up to the reality of why we felt he couldn't be a goalie. 'Look, Bud, goalie gear is really expensive. There's a Try Goalie for Free day coming up. We'll take you, and if you still think that this is something you want to do, we'll figure it out.'

At Goalie Day, Alex was so excited to put on the gear that he was allowed to borrow from Jake Kielb's Hockey Foundation. I still remember his beaming smile as he lumbered onto the ice for what would be his first time as a goalie. Every THUNK of the puck into the pads and every CRACK off the helmet made me cringe — but Alex came off the ice grinning from ear to ear. In that moment, I knew his dream was real, and our fear was how we could afford it.

Thankfully, through Gina's generosity, Alex received an entire head-to-toe goalie gear package. As he grew, the burden of cost became easier because we only had to replace pieces one at a time. Without this support, Alex's dream would not have been possible. We are honored to carry forward his legacy with the Alex Bush Memorial Goalie Scholarship so that other young goalies can live their dreams without financial burden.

Eligibility rules and submission requirements for our scholarship programs, as published for families in Southern Nevada.

Jake Kielb’s Hockey Scholarship Program

Closed

Supports local youth hockey players and goalies who need financial assistance to continue playing. Designed to help families with costs associated with youth hockey participation.

Eligibility & Requirements

Eligibility

  • Registered with a USA Hockey–affiliated youth organization located in Clark County, NV
  • 17 years of age or younger
  • Open to all youth players (not limited to travel hockey)

What to submit (email)

  • Completed application form (download from this site when applications are open)
  • Written statement of financial need, with supporting documentation (e.g. recent tax returns or other proof of need)
  • Optional: letter of recommendation from a coach or community member

Review Process

Applications are typically reviewed within two weeks of submission. Recipients are contacted by phone and/or email.

Payment

Award recipients coordinate scholarship payment directly with a representative of Jake Kielb’s Hockey Foundation.

Eligibility & Requirements

Eligibility

  • Player with an organization located in Clark County, NV
  • Planning to play goalie or currently playing goalie with a local ice hockey organization for the upcoming season

What to submit

  • Completed application form
  • Written statement of financial need (may include recent tax returns or other documentation)
  • Optional: letter of recommendation from a coach or community member
  • All questions must be answered completely — incomplete applications are not considered

Review Process

Reviewed by the selection committee within two weeks. Letters of recommendation are encouraged to highlight character, passion, and sportsmanship.

Payment

Recipients work with the Foundation to coordinate scholarship awards and gear support.
